Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984. Director Patty Jenkins returns for another round of DC action, with Gal Gadot back as Diana Prince. This time, they’re bringing the action to the 80s during the height of the Cold War. Plus, we’ve got Cheetah and Maxwell Lord along for the ride. This is easily poised to be one of the biggest sequels of 2020 and this provides us with our first real look at what’s coming our way.
The trailer made its debut at CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins were on hand to deliver the footage personally to those in attendance. Luckily, Warner Bros. decided to make the footage available online as well, so those of us who couldn’t make the trip to Brazil could see what Wonder Woman has in store for the 80s this summer. Jenkins co-wrote the screenplay alongside David Callaham (The Expendables), working from a story treatment she cooked up with comic book writer turned movie executive, Geoff Johns.
While many look to what has happened after Justice League as the turnaround for DC Films, Wonder Woman was truly the tip of that iceberg. The movie was released in summer 2017 before Justice League and was the first movie of the DCEU era to be met with both critical praise and financial success. It grossed an impressive $821 million globally. $412 million of that came domestically, which remains a record for DC. With that, the sequel became a top priority for the studio. A big part of that was getting Patty Jenkins back to direct, which proved to be a bit difficult since Warner Bros. didn’t lock her down for a sequel in her initial contract. As such, Jenkins had a lot of negotiating power and will be getting quite the hefty payday for her work.
This is just one of several major projects that DC Films has coming down the pipeline. In February 2020, they’ve got Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which sees Margot Robbie reprising her role as the fan-favorite character for the first time since Suicide Squad. 2021 will be packed, as we’ve got Matt Reeves’ long-awaited The Batman finally hitting theaters in June, which sees Robert Pattinson taking over as our new Bruce Wayne. Then James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad arrives in August, followed by Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam in December. Plus, Aquaman 2 is slated for December 2022. Given DC’s recent track record, it seems there is much to be hopeful for.
The cast also includes Chris Pine (Star Trek Beyond, Hell or High Water), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters), Pedro Pascal (Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Mandalorian), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure, Like a Boss), Ravi Patel (Long Shot, Grandfathered), Gabriella Wilde (Poldark, Carrie), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, The Devil’s Advocate) and Robin Wright (Unbreakable, House of Cards). Wonder Woman 1984 is set to hit theaters on June 4, 2020, from Warner Bros. Be sure to check out the new trailer for yourself.
