20th Century Fox has revealed the first trailer for The Woman in the Window. This one has been in the pipeline for some time and seems to have a lot going for it. It’s based on an acclaimed best-selling novel. Oscar-nominee Amy Adams is in the lead and Joe Wright (Atonement, Darkest Hour) is directing. Now, we finally have our first look at what appears to be a twisty, complex mystery.

The trailer kicks off by setting up Amy Adams as a woman with extreme anxiety and agoraphobia. She can’t go outside. So, she decides to bring some of the outside world to her in the form of a neighbor. They become fast friends and things seem to be going well. That is, until they aren’t. Things get complicated and trippy, setting up a situation that will keep the viewer guessing all along the way. There are some major Rear Window vibes here, for those who might be in the mood to see a modern riff on a Hitchcock-style thriller.

Originally, Fox has this movie slated for an awards-friendly October 2019 release date. However, once the Disney/Fox merger went into effect, things changed. Disney delayed the release to accommodate reshoots and retooling in the editing room, with reports suggesting that early test screenings confused audiences. Disney has suffered a string of flops they inherited from Fox in the $71.3 billion deal, which saw the studio scrambling a bit to figure out how to handle the remaining titles that were already in the works or completed. The movie is based on A.J. Finn’s 2018 novel of the same name.

The Woman in the Window centers on an agoraphobic child psychologist who befriends a neighbor who lives across the street from her New York City brownstone. Things get complicated when this woman sees her life turned upside down when her new friend disappears, as she suspects all is not what it seems to be. Shocking secrets are revealed, and no one is what it seems and nothing is as it appears on the surface. The cast includes Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour, The Dark Knight), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: Civil War, Pain & Gain), Wyatt Russell (Overlord, 22 Jump Street), Brian Tyree Henry (Widows, Child’s Play), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight, Annihilation) and Julianne Moore (Still Alice, Kingsman: The Golden Circle).

It’s worth pointing out that last time Joe Wright worked with Gary Oldman, we got the Oscar-winning Darkest Hour. So that bodes well. Tracy Letts (August Osage County, Killer Joe) penned the screenplay. The movie is produced by Scott Rudin, Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas. Will the delay and reshoots pay off for the studio? Can this avoid becoming another Ad Astra? Time will tell. The Woman in the Window is set to hit theaters on May 15, 2020, from 20th Century Fox. Be sure to check out the trailer for yourself.
