Honey Boy Trailer #2 Relives Shia LaBeouf’s Hollywood Rise and Fall

The second trailer for Honey Boy has arrived. Shia LaBeouf is on a bit of a hot streak after the release of Peanut Butter Falcon earlier this year. LaBeouf has run into some personal troubles over the past few years, but has since cleaned up after a stint in rehab. He took some of the recent pain, along with the pain of his childhood, and crafted the screenplay for the movie as a form of therapy while in rehab. Early reviews of Honey Boy have heaped praise on LaBeouf’s story and the performances within the movie.

In Honey Boy, director Alma Har’el brings to life a young actor’s stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father through cinema and dreams. Fictionalizing Shia LaBeouf’s childhood’s ascent to stardom, and subsequent adult crash-landing into rehab and recovery, Har’el casts Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges as Otis Lort, navigating different stages in a frenetic career. LaBeouf takes on the daring and therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Artist and musician FKA twigs makes her feature debut, playing neighbor and kindred spirit to the younger Otis in their garden-court motel home. Har’el’s feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as therapy and imagination as hope.

The production of Honey Boy started in 2018 and was quickly put together after Shia LaBeouf finished the screenplay. Principal photography lasted only 19 days and brought a light energy to some of the darker imagery in the movie. When asked about how making a movie based on his life affected his rehab, Shia LaBeouf revealed that it was written for him. He had this to say.

“It is strange to fetishize your pain and make a product out of it and feel guilty about that. It felt very selfish. This whole thing felt very selfish. I never went into this thinking, ‘Oh, I am going to f***ing help people.’ That wasn’t my goal. I was falling apart.”

In order to make his story fit on the big screen, Shia LaBeouf had to take some artistic license, mainly when having to do with time. The years are shifted a little, but that is not a huge change to a story. Honey Boy basically takes LaBeouf’s life and combines elements too, which is again, for time. For the most part, the actor’s life is shown on the big screen as it happened, though some has obviously been embellished and even downplayed at times.

Shia LaBeouf playing his own father really puts himself out there in Honey Boy. While many critics have been praising him for his story and his bravery for telling the story, there are more than a few who are not into the movie, especially the dark subject matter, which means that the movie isn’t going to be for everybody and that was the point all along. LaBeouf wrote the story for himself. You can check out the latest Honey Boy trailer above, thanks to the Amazon Studios YouTube channel.
